!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! It is going great! Today we woke up around 8. She had milk, I had coffee. She requested toast and strawberries, so she got toast and strawberries. After breakfast she took down her first quarter mile! It took us about 20 minutes (on foot). We had to stop at every drive way on the way to the cul de sac at the end of our street and “jump” off the lip of it to see if it was any good. None of them were. After that we took care of the animals and played in the SHOP! After that we went up to the playroom to play guitar and watch “Masha and the Bear”. We went for a car ride then had grilled cheeses for lunch. We read 4 stories...annnnnnd she’s out, my guess is til about 5. 1/4 mile on those tiny legs must be like 3 for you or I.

Kinja'd!!!

So last week I built my little girl, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and set it up next to mine. Then I showed you all. She loves it, but the bench sits about neck high with her feet on the ground. Non issue I can just give her something to stand on.....OR I can MAKE her something to stand on.....like a stool......OR like a little set of stairs!......

I had a long piece of 3/4" MDF that I halved, then hit 3 sides on each one with a 1/2" quarter round bit. Then I stole 2x12s from my wife’s compost bin addition and roughed out two steps. I figured I would have to use some sort of bracing between the two supports but I fastened the supports individually with pocket hole screws. flipped it over and walked to the top step. I did a little hop hop and stepped down feeling pretty damned proud of myself, haha. “look at me I have my own set of stairs!” (boratkinginthecastle.gif)

Now I have to find something to do with myself until she wakes up. I have actually managed to get a little work done and am currently playing frisbee with the doggos and duck. The duck chases the frisbee but then stays back while the dogs battle it out for who gets to bring it back to me.

Happy Monday!

Those Kre g jigs sure make things nice and easy. Looks great! Plus it can easily be converted to something else should she wish to branch out!

Thanks! It is crazy easy . T here are a lot of projects that I would have never even made an attempt on, if it was not for pocket hole joinery.

This is excellent Dadlopniking!

When the wee one gets a little bigger, I suggest adding a cross brace for added shear strength. Oh, and my girls love playing with the $4 Harbor Freight socket set I got them.

Right, this is the best! My wife works and watches the kiddo all day. That is crazy, but just watching this munchkin I could get down with.

They can be tons of fun when they’re little. Mine are teenagers now. They can be fun when they want to, but it’s hard to beat the pure joy of a happy little kid.

I’ll have to share my little bathroom sink kids’ stool design with you. It was based on an old stool that probably came from my grandparents, but was modified in part to just use the bits of scrap wood I had around without buying any new material. And I also wanted them to be light (so the kids could easily move them). Anyway, I’ll have to make up a post on that. I love seeing the kids using them every day and they’ve held up well.

Yea do it! A stool is going to be the first project that her and I work on together.

Rather than create a whole new post right now, here are some pictures. The dimensions are 1x the width of my vanity’s door(s) wide, by about 12" high - but not exactly 12" because the piece of plywood I had allowed me to make 4 of the side pieces at this size and no bigger. It’s something nice and round like 11-5/8" - anyway, here you are:

Kinja'd!!!

In all its toothpaste-water-stained glory! The height was sufficient for my kids to be able to reach our faucets at the age where they were starting to use the bathroom on their own, so, fine.

The treads are thicker than they look from the front - they were leftover pieces of rough sawn boards used on our ceiling / subfloor of the second floor (post & beam construction). The leading edge is machined almost like tongue & groove but only to one side. Here:

Kinja'd!!!

The pieces on the back are actually old pine trim that I’d replaced somewhere in the house, I just sanded down the old pieces and re-used them. O ne might just be leftover trim from the replacement sections.

Kinja'd!!!

The back tapers out a little for stability when it’s not up against the vanity, and it also keeps the top of the stool from marking the vanity doors except possibly where the curve of the stool meets the bottom edge of the doors. For all the times the kids have slammed this stool into both vanities, I don’t see any wear. I think I’d have to lie down on the floor 12" from the doors to see any marks.

Kinja'd!!!

The screws just go right into the endgrain of the treads. There was also glue applied at final assembly. The top tread does have that rear piece to rest on, which also keeps it from racking side to side. I didn’t try to hide the screws, you have to have it up on end like that to really notice them, and the plywood is too thin to have plugged the holes.

Here’s the other one, slightly different top tread setup. Not sure why, ask my sleep-deprived brain from when our first kid was a baby. It’s worse, and makes no sense, with the rear piece standing proud of the top tread.

Kinja'd!!!

Anyway, they’re super light, they’ve held up well, and both my wife and I use them occasionally too. I wouldn’t jump up and down on the bottom tread, but I’m 145lbs and it’s fine. I mostly just step on the top, of course.

Again, this basic design was stolen from some ancient thing my parents have. Feel free to modify/steal/copy exactly/ ignore it completely.
